Hip Replacement Rehab & Therapy
Restore Mobility. Regain Confidence.
Every year, more than 300,000 Americans undergo hip replacement surgery — a number that’s expected to nearly double by 2030. The most common reason is osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that often can’t be fully managed with medications or nonsurgical treatments.
At Bella Vista Health Center, our goal is to help patients recover faster, stronger, and safer through comprehensive, customized hip replacement rehabilitation programs led by experienced therapists and compassionate medical professionals.
Rehab Begins Right After Surgery
Rehabilitation after hip replacement surgery begins almost immediately — usually within 24 hours after the procedure. Early movement helps prevent stiffness, promote circulation, and speed recovery.
Patients start with gentle exercises and basic mobility training such as:
Moving from lying to sitting
Standing with assistance from a walker
Eating meals upright
Walking a few steps safely
By the time of hospital discharge, most patients can walk approximately 200 feet using a walker, crutches, or cane.
Following a Personalized Therapy Plan
The first 6–8 weeks after surgery are crucial for recovery and preventing hip dislocation. Our therapy specialists design individualized rehabilitation plans to strengthen leg muscles, increase joint flexibility, and restore stability.
Common hip replacement exercises include:
Quad Squeezes: Strengthen gluteal and thigh muscles
Heel Slides: Engage quadriceps and glutes to improve mobility
Hip Abductions: Promote pelvic stability and normal gait
Knee Extensions: Enhance flexibility and joint function
What to Expect During Rehabilitation
Our outpatient physical therapy programs are tailored to each patient’s condition, pace, and personal goals. Using advanced techniques and equipment, we guide patients through every stage of recovery — from basic mobility to confident independence.
Rehab sessions may include:
Balance and stability exercises
Strength and gait training
Ice therapy to reduce swelling
Heat therapy to ease muscle tightness
Functional movement training (getting out of bed, into a car, or up stairs)
Goal-oriented programs (returning to sports or favorite activities)
How Long Does Hip Replacement Rehab Take?
Recovery timelines vary depending on individual progress, but most patients resume daily activities within 6 weeks. More demanding activities or recreational pursuits may require 8–12 weeks of continued therapy.
General timeline:
Walking: 2–4 weeks with a cane, 4–6 weeks without assistance
Using Stairs: 1 week with support, 4–6 weeks independently
Driving: 4–6 weeks (depending on transmission type)
Returning to Work: 4–10 weeks (depending on physical demands)
